Education Week, a nonprofit media organization that provides news, analysis, and research on K-12 American education, is seeking a Staff Writer to join our newsroom.

Job Summary

Education Week seeks a versatile general assignment reporter to cover district, state, and federal policy and political developments in K-12 education and related social and cultural trend pieces, framing the coverage for professional educators and education policymakers. This reporter should be adept at pivoting off the daily news; providing sidebars and content derivatives independently and with beat reporters; and working across editorial teams. They should have experience covering government and politics; proven source development skills; and the ability to deliver daily work as well as enterprise content with style, voice, edge, and clarity.


  • Maintain a thorough understanding of assigned beat
  • Pitch and deliver a mix of daily and longer-term enterprise work on your beat
  • Write clear, authoritative articles that present complex information and issues fairly and completely
  • Meet daily and longer-term deadlines consistently
  • Collaborate regularly with visual journalists and digital news strategists to deliver content in a variety of compelling storytelling forms, and with the social media team on reporting and audience engagement.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Education Week audience
  • Assist with and moderate live and virtual events for Education Week as assigned
  • Adhere to Education Week and Associated Press style
  • Contribute to production duties, such as proofreading, as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5 or more years as a reporter and a bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge and understanding of K-12 education issues and trends
  • Strong news judgment: ability to recognize news and conceptualize stories for Education Week audiences
  • High metabolism for story production
  • Strong collaboration skills with visual journalists, digital news strategists, fellow reporters, and editors
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to craft stories clearly, concisely, and accurately on daily deadlines
  • Ability to juggle daily assignments with longer-term enterprise work and to meet reporting and writing deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to travel on occasion for on-site school reporting assignments
  • Excellent communication skills
