Assistant Managing Editor
Education Week is seeking an Assistant Managing Editor to join its newsroom.
The Assistant Managing Editor role for Education Week is a vital position in our news operation
as these editors are most directly responsible for planning coverage and guiding our reporting
efforts. At the same time, these editors sit at the forefront of our strategic imperative to develop
deep expertise in the audience communities we serve. In our newsroom, each Assistant
Managing Editor is responsible for supervising 2-4 reporters while also acting as our resident
expert on one of the five main audience groups we serve (district leaders, principals, teachers,
policy and industry leaders, and higher education professionals).
We are looking for an editor who understands K-12 education and can articulate a vision for coverage on topics that are fresh, insightful, and highly relevant and geared to the K-12 professional audience. Specifically, this Assistant Managing Editor will oversee, among other topics, our coverage of how race impacts educational opportunity.
The Assistant Managing Editor will join a seasoned and energetic editing team dedicated to helping reporters be highly productive while building deep subject matter expertise and strong connections with our audiences. We are looking for an editor equally capable of driving daily stories off education-related news, studies and trends while working to produce deep-dive enterprise projects, series, and special reports. This editor will also work closely with reporters and our business-side colleagues to help shape live and virtual events.

- Lead and manage a group of 2-4 reporters, working with them to develop and execute coverage plans on their respective beats
- Work one-on-one with individual reporters on their stories, providing guidance before and during the story development, and diligent editing of copy when the story is filed
- Assure overall quality of all content produced by your reporter group
- Coordinate closely with the Visual and Immersive Experience (VEX) team to assure that the visual expression of our journalism is carefully considered and executed
- Develop and maintain a high level of understanding of one of our main audience groups – to be assigned by Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor – including attending professional conferences of that group, using EdWeek’s audience analytics, and other activities as necessary
- Serve as the voice of that audience group in daily news meetings and other newsroom activities, assuring that the news and information needs of the assigned audience group are always given consideration
- Committed to exploring issues of equity, inclusion, racial, gender and social justice in K-12 education
- Develop and produce Special Reports as assigned
- Help coordinate efforts with EdWeek’s Development office on coverage supported through grants, including helping to develop grant proposals for new funding and providing reports for existing funding
- Provide ‘second read’ editing on stories from other editors, as available
- Work with social media and audience engagement teams on launch plans for stories and packages of stories to assure maximum exposure to the right audience
- Bachelor’s degree, with at least 5-7 years’ related experience in a news, media, information, or education organization, preferably with at least two years of editing experience
- Extensive knowledge of the field of K-12 education
- Ability to recognize news and trends in education, and conceptualize appropriate coverage and content for Education Week and its multiple platforms
- Excellent hands-on editing skills
- Strong orientation toward delivering results, able to set priorities and manage individuals to achieve them
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with various levels of management and audience
- Excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills
- Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficient in editorial software programs and comfortable adapting to changing technologies in those programs
